Title: Metro Vancouver Cracking Down on Illegal Dumping
The Metro Vancouver authority is cracking down on illegal dumping which costs local municipalities $5 million each year to clean up. While most residents say they hate seeing illegal dumping taking place, still 60 per cent say they have illegally dumped or will illegally dump furniture, household items or appliances in the future, citing inconvenience as a reason. “We were also surprised to learn that a large proportion of residents – 40 per cent – also thought it was okay dump items in public spaces, believing it is just another form of recycling,” said Metro Vancouver chair Greg Moore. To combat illegal dumping, the regional authority is partnering with municipalities to launch a campaign called Waste in its Place to educate residents about where items can be disposed instead of illegally dumped, and to encourage residents to make use of local large-item pickup services, pop-up junk days and spring cleaning events. Last year, local municipalities recorded 37,257 instances of abandoned waste such as mattresses, appliances, carpeting, tires, and other household garbage.
